Online violin, viola, cello tuner.

Use this free online violin tuner to tune your violin. This is for the standard GDAE violin tuning. Please see photo reference. Beginners should learn to tune with the assistance of a teacher. If tuning requires minor adjustments it’s best for the beginner to use the fine tuners located on the tailpiece. More advanced players may choose to use the pegs and fine tuners, which are intended for large and small changes in pitch. Use the tuning pegs located in the scroll to get close to the correct tone, and then use the fine tuners on the tail piece to do the fine tuning.

Please note that If the violin is extremely out of tune or if you are replacing the strings on the violin, and tuning it the first time, care must be taken not to tune the string too tightly as this could cause breakage. All strings are made to perform well when tuned to the proper pitch. But many beginners have difficulty discerning the correct pitch therefore it is valuable to either begin tuning with the help of an instructor or with the use of a tuning device that indicates when the correct pitch has been achieved.

It will take practice to discern if the pitch is too high or too low in relation to the correct pitch. Remember that the bridge is not glued or attached to the violin, it is held there by the tension of the strings. If the tension varies too much it might cause the bridge to collapse. Also while you are tuning pay attention to the bridge, it should always be perpendicular to the violin and not tipping forward or backwards.
